Functional Capacity Assessments

Our process for completing FCA assignments is conducted in accordance with the principles of the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015, which emphasize a person’s right to autonomy and the presumption of capacity unless proven otherwise. Its purpose is to determine a Capacity Applicant’s ability to make defined or specific decisions regarding areas affecting their healthcare, financial matters, financial affairs or living arrangements, etc. Assessments follow a functional approach: evaluating the named person’s understanding, retention and weighing of information, along with their ability to communicate in relation to any such decision(s).

It’s important to recognise, under the Act and as best practice, that making a poor or unwise decision does not automatically mean a person lacks capacity. We all make decisions others might not agree with; that is part of what it means to live freely and with dignity.

We have access to a team of experienced practitioners to provide  objective, professional, and person-centred assessments, ensuring that any supports felt necessary for decision-making have been considered.  Completed reports outline our findings, conclusions, and recommendations for supporting the individual in their decision-making at this time. The principal of minimal intervention is key.

An effective FCA respects a person’s will, preferences, beliefs, and wishes to ensure a rights-based, person-centred approach; it also aligns the UN Conventions on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
